MARSHALL, Texas - A very competitive match from the beginning, the East Texas Baptist University men' soccer team came up shy of the win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 2-1. ETBU is now 2-3-1 overall and 0-2 in ASC play.
The game was competitive throughout, with ETBU's
Dominic Wood scoring a clutch goal in the final moments of the contest. It was not enough though as ETBU fell to UMHB. UMHB will improve to 5-1 on the year and 2-0 in the ASC.
"It was a Tale of two halves. We hurt ourselves in the first half by making mental mistakes that lead to two goals for them. Credit to UMHB for finishing them. Second half we fought, we worked, and we proved we got more. Proud of the way our guys finished, now we got to want it more," said head coach
Chris Crawford.
The Crusaders broke the scoring seal first in the match. A goal from just inside the box by Julio Mar gave the road team the early 1-0 advantage. UMHB responded several minutes later with another goal, this time by Jason Goodin to increase the lead to 2-0 heading into intermission.
With one half of soccer in the books, the Crusdaers outshot the Tigers six to two early in the game.
Both teams were aggressive creating shot opportunities in the second half, but the defense on both sides proved to be stellar. ETBU finally broke the long drought with a goal by
Dominic Wood with 5:32 to play in the ball game.
But the visiting team was able to hold off the comeback effort by the Tigers to come away with the 2-1 victory on Saturday night.
Wood scored the only goal for the Tigers and
Michael Andrews chipped in an assist in the loss.
The men's squad will travel to Abilene, Texas, where they will face off against the McMurry University Warhawks on Thursday, Sept. 21. The match is set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
