MARSHALL, Texas – Two strong defenses battled to the end at Cornish Field in American Southwest Conference play as Sul Ross State University held off a late East Texas Baptist University charge, 2-1. ETBU drops to 6-4-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in ASC play.
Both teams battled back and forth to start the contest, neither recording a goal until the 19:19 mark of the first half. SRSU's Lauren Ebbs chased down the loose ball and sank the goal for the 1-0 lead. The Tigers responded with a long shot by Kibrianna Bonner off of a free kick resulting in a goal for the home team, tying the game at 1-1 with just over four minutes (41st minute) to play in the half. Both teams ended the first half with a 1-1 tie. ETBU hoisted nine shots in the opening half, while SRSU had only one shot off the goal scored.
It took only five minutes for the Lobos to take the lead in the second half making it 2-1. The Tigers had numerous opportunities down the stretch to tie the ball game, but the goal but couldn't find the net.
ETBU took 17 shots overall, while the Lobos fired 11 shots for the game. SRSU also finished with nine to ETBU's four in the contest.
ETBU will return to Cornish Field on Wednesday, Oct. 4, for a non-conference matchup against Austin College. The game is set to kick-off at 6:00 p.m.
