LORMAN, Mississippi - Making a big statement with two goals in each half, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team shocked NCAA Division I opponent Alcorn State with a 4-1 victory. The win pushes ETBU's record to 2-2 on the season.
"I'm so proud of the way our team played today. We had a great opportunity to play a NCAA Division I opponent in Alcorn State, and we took full advantage of that from the first whistle to the last. We played a complete match and earned the result we deserved. Our team showed a lot of class and character in how we competed, and I couldn't be more proud of how we played as a team! I hope the result motivates us and we can carry over what we learned today into the rest of the season," said head coach
Erik Solberg.
After a scoreless nine minutes, ETBU would stun the Braves with two goals in the tenth minute.
Hannah Murin started it off with a shot to the back left corner for a 1-0 lead. Just 42 seconds later,
Ashleigh Rondon stole the ball and made it 2-0 in ETBU's favor. ETBU was able to keep the ball in ASU's end of the field for much of the second half applying six shots.Â
The second half was back and forth for both teams as each had opportunities to score. But in the 69th minute, ETBU found net again for their third goal when Rondon connected for her second of the game.
Heather Brady scored off a corner kick 12 minutes later for the 4-0 lead. ETBU's chance for a shutout ended in the final minute when ASU's Rita Okoro converted a penalty kick for the Braves only goal.Â
Of the 15 shots taken by ETBU, which included 10 on goal, Rondon led with seven shots including five on net. Both
Karrigan Falber and
Claire Montondon played a half and combined for five saves. Okra was the top shooter for ASU with four shots and three on net. Goalkeeper Kameran Proby had six saves while playing the full 90 minutes.
ETBU will continue their road schedule with a game against the University of Dallas in Irving this Sunday. The kickoff is at 2:00 PM.
