RECAP: @ETBU_Soccer Battle with Ozarks Ends in 3-3 Tie

MARSHALL, Texas – Locked in a tight American Southwest Conference battle, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team's match against the University of the Ozarks went down to the wire, ending in a 3-3 stalemate on Thursday night. Unable to come away with a clear winner in the match, ETBU goes to 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in ASC competition.

Juan Cairo, Samuel Arellano and Daniel Rutter each scored goals in the match. Rutter led the way in shot attempts, launching five total, with four coming right at the net. Silas Sangano also attempted five shots, while dishing out two assists on the night. Defensively, Bryant Botello recorded six saves in the hard fought contest. ETBU held the slight edge in shot attempts over OU, at 19-18, respectively.

OU was the first to score in the match, with Michael Luster sinking a goal from several yards out off of an assist by Miguel Reyes to take the early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the half. Cairo responded 14 minutes later, converting a shot off of the assist by Sangano to square the match at 1-1.
Arellano would score his first goal of the season at the 39th minute of the ballgame, giving the Tigers the 2-1 just before halftime. OU was unable to answer in the final six minutes of the half, leaving the score at 2-1 in the first 45 minutes. Ozarks outshot ETBU by a slight margin, 6-5, while the Tigers held the edge on the defensive end, tallying two saves to OU's one.

The Tigers wasted no time in building on the 2-1 lead, as a beautiful cross by Sangano to Rutter increased the lead to 3-1 at the 47th minute of the match. But OU would continue to battle, in spite of several shot attempts going awry. The Ozarks finally scored their second goal at the 83rd minute by Richard Stouffant to narrow the deficit to 3-2. OU responded two minutes later with yet another goal by Stouffant to knot the game at 3-3 with 5:50 to play.

Neither team was able to finish off the game in regulation, resulting in a 3-3 tie heading into the extra period. Both Botello and Logan Valestin protected their respective goals, leaving the contest all even at 3-3.

ETBU will host the University of Texas-Tyler on Cornish Field on Saturday, Oct. 13. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off.
