JACKSON, Mississippi - Two late second half goals were all that were needed for the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team as they picked up a key American Southwest Conference victory against Belhaven University, 2-0. This win means the Tigers sit at 6-5-2 overall and are 3-3-2 in the ASC.
ETBU would get goals from both
Max Ponticorvo and
Daniel Rutter, who also led the team with two shots.
Bryant Botello compiled a shutout for all 90 minutes while making two saves. BU had two players with two shots in Max Maguire and Nathan Ratzlaff. Goalkeeper Thomas Blake allowed two goals while making three saves for the Blazers
The first half was mainly a defensive struggle as both sides would combine to take five shots. BU would take the first shot three minutes into the match while ETBU would get their first shot off eight minutes later. The Tigers picked up a second shot around the 19th minute. BU then followed up with two shots for the rest of the half, with one being saved by Botello. Each team would managed to battle for possession as the buzzer sounded to end the first half with a scoreless tie.
ETBU would have an early chance in the second half to score only to be called for offsides. The shutout would remain in tack for much of the second half although both sides would have a chance. A Blazer shot was saved by Botello at 68:24 while ETBU would have a shot go high above the net at 73:21. Ultimately, the Tigers would break through as Ponticorvo capitalized in the 80th minute for a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Rutter would add the insurance goal to seal the 2-0 victory for the Tigers.
ETBU continues their road trip this Saturday as they will take on Louisiana College at 2:30 p.m. in Pineville, La.
