MARSHALL, Texas – Honoring seniors Megan Friend and Cristal Monzon-Hernandez for Senior Night, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team's shut out Howard Payne University, 2-0, for their eighth win of the year. Raegan Kappler had a two goal performance that gave ETBU the victory improving them to 8-7-1 overall and 5-6-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
On the day, ETBU outshot HPU 18-6 with an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Half of the shots went to Raegan Kappler, who also had seven shots on goal and scored twice in the game. One of the goals came off an assist from Hernandez, who along with Friend had a shot in the game too. ETBU goalkeeper Claire Montondon posted a shutout in which she picked up four saves in net. HPU saw Lesly Garia lead the way with three shots while both of Dayane Gutierrez's shots were on goal. Despite allowing two ETBU goals in net, Delaney Castor collected six saves for the Yellow Jackets.
The game started with ETBU having two shots to the net while HPU had one in the first 11 minutes. But the scoreless game would be broken as Kappler would fire to the top right of the corner from Hernandez to see ETBU up 1-0 in the 13th minute. This would lead to ETBU controlling the tempo of the half as they would put up 13 shots with eight corner kicks. Defensively, the Tigers would hold HPU to just one more shot for the rest of the half.
The second half would start to see HPU play with a little more intensity as they would have two early shots that were both saved by Montondon. The two teams would trade nine shots with the Tigers having five of them. HPU did have another chance to equalize in the 77th minute when a shot went high above the net. But two minutes later, Kappler would strike from inside the box and the Tigers would go up 2-0 (79th minute). Although there was still time to overcome the deficit, the Yellow Jackets would manage just one shot in the final minutes as ETBU kept the shutout intact.
ETBU will head off to Richardson, Texas, to take on the University of Texas Dallas in the first round of the ASC conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.
