MARSHALL, Texas – Battling from start to finish, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team was unable to put together a last second run to hold off the Schreiner University Mountaineers falling 83-82 in the final game of the ASC/SCAC Crossover. ETBU is now 1-1 on the season. The Tigers will take the trip to Conway, Ark., to battle the Hendrix College Warriors on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
Landin Brown led the way for ETBU with a tremendous all-around effort across the board. Brown recorded 18 points, six rebounds, nine assists and six steals. Jarell Taylor added 14 points and six rebounds and
Robby Dooley and
Westin Riddick each chipped in 11 points each. Overall, ETBU connected on 50 percent of their field goals (31-of-62) and 36 percent of their shots from the three-point line (9-of-25). Matthew Rindhal led the way for SU with 16 points and seven rebounds.
After an early bucket by Ellis Jones, Brown answered back moments later with a three pointer to give ETBU the early advantage, 3-2, in the first minute of the half. Back-to-back layups by
Zach Elliott off assists by Dooley and Taylor increased the lead to three (7-4) over the next few possessions. A three pointer by Dooley from the top of the key capped a 7-0 run by the Tigers, pushing the score to 10-4. As the Mountaineers began to chip away at the lead, a three point jumper by Fontenot kept the road team at bay, keeping ETBU ahead 15-10 at the 14:05 mark of the contest. A 6-0 run that was solidified with a three pointer by Chase Pinter gave SU the one point lead, 16-15, toward the midway point of the half. Pinter would strike again in the final 30 seconds of the first half, maintaining a one point lead for the Mountaineers, 42-41, heading into intermission.
The first 30 seconds of the second half would see the Tigers strike first, with Taylor connecting on a three pointer from deep in the corner to give ETBU the two point advantage (44-42). SU would hold a one point lead two minutes later, until yet another three by Taylor pushed the lead back to two, 49-47. ETBU would increase the lead to four (54-50) after a steal and a dunk by Dooley on the next several possessions. The Tigers took their largest lead of the contest down the stretch, going up eight off of a long jumper by Riddick (75-67) with 7:18 to play. The Mountaineers responded by chipping away at the lead, ending the game on a 16-5 spurt to go on top 83-80. Free throws by Brown would trim the small deficit to one, 83-82, in the final seconds. Brown launched a desperate attempt with three seconds to play but the shot would only draw iron, ending in an 83-82 loss for the Tigers.
ETBU will take on the Hendrix College Warriors on Tuesday, Nov. 20 in Conway, Ark. The game is set to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. from Grove Gymnasium.
