AUSTIN, Texas – Powered by a combined 40 points by
Robby Dooley and
Nathan Fontenot, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team snuck out the 97-95 win over Concordia University (TX) on Saturday evening. ETBU moves to 1-1 in American Southwest Conference games and 3-2 overall after the road victory.
Dooley overcame foul trouble in the first half to score a team-high 21 points and several clutch baskets down the stretch. Fontenot added 19 points on five made three pointers.
Landin Brown turned in another solid all-around effort with 16 points, four rebounds and seven assists. Jarell Taylor recorded 14 points, while
Westin Riddick contributed 12 points of his own on four shots from beyond the arc. Chris Hanes rounded out the all-around effort for the Tigers with 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. As a team, ETBU continued its stellar shooting connecting on 34-of-63 (54.0%) from the field and 11-of-25 (44.0%) from the three-point line. Ephraim Price III had an impressive 37 points to lead CTX.
ETBU jumped out early to start the first half. Riddick picked off a pass in the first nine seconds of play, leading to a layup by Taylor for the game's first score. Brown would record a steal of his own, stripping Price III and soaring for the layup to seal a 4-0 start in the first minute. The Tornados responded with a 13-3 run over the next 3:30 to go on top by six, 13-7. CTX maintained a six point lead (24-18) until back-to-back three pointers by Fontenot and Riddick tied the ballgame at 24-24 at the 10:55 mark of the half. Taylor would round out a string of three consecutive three pointers by the Tigers to take the 27-26 lead 40 seconds later. ETBU trailed 44-41, until the Tigers outscored the Tornados 9-4 in the final three minutes to take the 50-48 lead into the locker room.
Dooley scored his first points of the contest on a euro step around Tornado defenders for the layup to bring the score to 56-50 in the first 90 seconds. ETBU trailed CTX 71-70 down the stretch, until a deep three pointer by Fontenot gave the Tigers the 73-71 advantage at the 9:27 mark of the game. ETBU pushed the lead to eight (93-85) in the final minutes when the home team sparked a 7-0 run to get to within one, at 93-92 with 1:22 to play. Dooley would have the answer for the Tigers, banking home back-to-back acrobatic baskets at the room to give the ball club the 97-94 lead with time winding down. CTX would nearly tip in a missed free throw that would have tied the ballgame, but were unable to come away with the bucket, leading to the 97-95 victory.
ETBU will return home for a matchup against Sul Ross State University on Saturday, Dec. 8. Tip-off time is set for 3:00 p.m. from Ornelas Gymnasium.
