PINEVILLE, Louisiana – Overcoming to big rallies from Louisiana College to fall behind in both games, the East Texas Baptist University softball team showed their resiliency in two come-from-behind wins against the Wildcats. With the series victory, ETBU is 17-3 overall and 11-0 in conference play.
Game one would see ETBU storm back from two down in the late innings to pick up a 7-4 triumph.
Mikaelyn Settles would lead ETBU with three hits while
Morgan Arst drove in three runs.
Jordan Anderson went the distance allowing four runs on four hits while striking out seven batters. LC's Abby Sterling was the top producer with a three-run homer while she, Briley Johnson, Taylor Hammock, and Sami Walters each had a hit. The loss was given to Savannah Settle, who went six innings giving up five runs on seven hits with one walk and strikeout. Chelsea Lewis would pick up one inning allowing two insurance runs by ETBU on three hits.
Game two saw ETBU come back from one behind to tack on two runs to pick up a 6-5 victory.
Linzie Lewis led the way with three hits and two runs batted in while
Daniella Solis (RBI) and
MacKenzie Anderson would each pick up two hits.
Rocki Tello started for ETBU, but lasted three innings giving up five runs on four hits while picking up two strikeouts.
McKayla Hendrix would pick up her third win on the season with four one-hit shutout innings and two strikeouts to go with one walk. Walters, Mattie Stine, Sterling, Samantha Cetta, and Kaitlyn Moore got hits for LC with everyone but Cetta picking up an RBI. Although Chelsea Lewis (2.1 IP, six hits, three runs) started for the Wildcats, Cameron Crochet (4.2 IP, five hits, three runs, one strikeout) couldn't hang on to the lead and took the loss.
Game 1 – ETBU 7, LC 4
After each team went 1-2-3 in their first inning while Settles would retire the next three batters in the top of the second inning.
Jordan Anderson would surrender a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second, but she still faced the minimum when the runner was caught stealing and a popup and groundout ended the threat. ETBU would then get the first two runs on a single and advancement error from Arst to go up 2-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, LC would tack on a two-out rally, which would lead to four runs to go up 4-2 after four innings. ETBU would get to within one in the top of the fifth inning when
Nikki Gil reached on an error. One inning later, ETBU would get a two-out double from
Daniella Solis to represent the tying run. But ETBU was unable to get the tying run in. LC threatened to extend the game with the bases loaded in the sixth, but couldn't do anything.
This set the stage for an ETBU rally that started with a homer by Settles to tie it at 4-4. Moments later, after a Gil triple,
Jeanette Galvan would give ETBU a 5-4 lead with a single. Insurance runs coming from a fielder's choice by Arst and a
Sabrina Salts single made it 7-4. ETBU would get the last three outs in the bottom of the frame.
Game 2 – ETBU 6, LC 5
ETBU would continue the momentum in the top of the first inning of the second game as they loaded the bases before singles by
Madison Prince and a hit by pitch to Settles made the score 2-0. A scoreless second inning was followed by a solo homer for Solis to make it 3-0 in the top of the third inning. But LC would grab the lead with five runs.
ETBU would not back down as Lewis would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run double. One inning later, Gill reached on a fielder's choice that scored
Brea Robinson to give ETBU a 6-5 edge. LC did put together a two-out rally as they had two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth. But Hendrix was able to keep the runners stranded there.
ETBU will attempt to sweep Louisiana College tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
