AUSTIN, Texas – Playing in a tough environment on the road in central Texas, the East Texas Baptist University softball team would come away with a split against the Concordia University-Texas Tornados. ETBU would win game one in extra innings, 3-0, but then drop game two, 4-3. ETBU now holds a 28-8 record and is 21-5 in the American Southwest Conference.
Game one would be a 3-0 win for ETBU as
Jordan Anderson would get the win. She pitched all eight shutout innings allowing three hits while striking out 10 batters.
Jackie Ramos,
MacKenzie Anderson (RBI),
Sabrina Salts,
Linzie Lewis (RBI), and
Grace Camacho would each get a hit. Haley Dennett had two hits to lead CTX while Jordan Russell was given the loss with eight innings allowing all three runs and five hits from ETBU.
Game two saw CTX hold off an ETBU rally for a 4-3 win. Ramos and Salts (two RBI) would have two hits each in the contest while
Chelsea Ham took a loss with 4.2 innings of relief allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two batters. Summer Harper (two RBI) and Haley Dennett (RBI) each had two hits for CTX while Simon Langland (5.2 innings, two runs, five hits, four strikeouts) and Russell (1.1 innings, one run, two hits, one strikeout) got the win and save respectively.
Game 1 – ETBU 3, CTX 0 (8 Innings)
Each team would start the first two innings by putting a runner on base but they were unable to drive them in. ETBU would get a single from
MacKenzie Anderson in the first inning while CTX would get a double in the second inning. The Tigers would get an opportunity to score in the fourth inning with two runners in scoring position with two outs but a groundout ended the inning.
One inning later, ETBU would load the bases but were unable to score as the game remained scoreless through five innings. CTX would be able to get the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out. However,
Jordan Anderson would strike out the next two hitters to end the threat. The game went into extra innings where Lewis would get a two-out single in the top of the eighth inning to score Arst for a 1-0 lead. This would be followed by a single and an error off the bat of Salts plus an error off the bat of
Grace Camacho for a 3-0 lead. Anderson then shut the door in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
Game 2 – CTX 4, ETBU 3
CTX struck first for two runs with two RBI singles with two outs to go up 2-0 in the bottom of the first. ETBU's offense was not able to get going for the first four innings as they only picked up two hits. But that changed in the top of the fifth inning when Salts tied the game with a two-run homer.
CTX would answer in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run, two-out double to reclaim the lead at 4-2. ETBU would put together a last ditch rally in the top of the seventh inning as they scored one to cut the lead to 4-3. With the bases loaded and one out, ETBU was unable to get in the go-ahead runs as CTX survived with the win.
Game three of this series will start at 4:00 PM tomorrow.
