RICHARDSON, Texas - Although they were involved in two tight games on Saturday, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team were unable to pick up a win as they took two losses to the University of Texas Dallas Comets in the doubleheader. ETBU ends the regular season 21-19 overall and 11-13 in the conference.
Game one would see ETBU take an early 1-0 lead only to give up two home runs in a 2-1 loss to UTD.
Jack Hanstad,
Brady Faulkner,
Casey Combs,
Drew Large, and
Jonathon Sylvester each had a hit for ETBU while
Zach Gartner collected the only RBI on the day for the Tigers.
Derrick Findley suffered his first loss of the season when he pitched six innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two.
Game two would find an ETBU rally fall short in the ninth as the Tigers fell 7-5.
Seth Mikeska led the way with three hits while he, Gartner, and Combs had an RBI.
Blake Corbin took the loss with two innings pitched allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three.
Game 1: UTD 2, ETBU 1
ETBU would strike first in the top of the first inning as Gartner's sacrifice fly to center made the score 1-0 in ETBU's favor. The second inning saw both teams threaten with runners in scoring position only to be denied the chance to score by the defense and pitching of the other side.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Findley surrendered a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. One inning later, the Comets took the lead on another solo shot for a 2-1 edge. ETBU's bats remained quiet as they would only get one single for the remainder of the game.
Game 2: UTD 7, ETBU 5
It would be UTD that went up early with a two-run first inning to lead 2-0. But
Dylan Sumpter reaching base on an error in the top of the second inning allowed the tying runs to score for ETBU and it was 2-2. UTD answered back in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out, two-run single to make the score 4-2.
Chances for ETBU in the third and fourth inning went nowhere before Combs cut the UTD lead to 4-3 with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning. The Comets would extend their lead with three runs over the next two innings to jump ahead 7-3. With only three outs remaining in the top of the ninth inning, ETBU loaded the bases with one out. But Gartner's fly ball only went for a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-4. After a ten pitch at-bat, Mikeska kept the inning alive with an RBI single as ETBU trailed 7-5 with the go-ahead run coming to bat. But that was as close as ETBU would get as UTD picked up a strikeout to end the game.
ETBU will now wait and see where they will be heading in next week's ASC Conference Tournament.
