#TIGERSWIN: Sangano's Golden Goal Lifts @ETBU_Soccer Past SRSU in 2 OT

ALPINE, Texas – Silas Sangano silenced Sul Ross State University crowd with 18 seconds left in the second overtime as he picked up the golden goal for East Texas Baptist University winning, 3-2. It was his second goal of the match as ETBU moves to 4-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the American Southwest Conference.

Sangano finished with three shots and two goals while Brett Rose recorded the other goal of the match. Samuel Arellano would pick up the lone assist for ETBU while both Bryant Botello (nine saves) and Justin Groves (six saves) finished with 15 saves combined on 27 SRSU shots. The Lobos were led by Luis Gonzalez, who tallied two goals on seven shots while goalkeeper Frank Rodriguez saved nine shots.

Much of the first half was a defensive battle as both sides would get opportunities to score only to be stopped by excellent goalkeeping. Each team struck for two shots each in the first ten minutes with no chance past the keepers. The next ten minutes would see the Lobos in control as they would compile several shots but Botello would defend them from going in. However, the Tigers would grab possession as they would start applying pressure with multiple shot attempts for the rest of the half. This would finally pay off in the 41st minute when Sangano tapped in a cross from Arellano for a 1-0 lead. Almost three minutes later, Rose would strike one off the post as ETBU took a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

The Lobos would apply early pressure in the second half as they sought out a goal to end the shutout. It would be fifteen minutes in at the 60th minute before Gonzalez would score the first SRSU goal to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sensing a momentum shift, the Lobos continued to gather chances to equalize. They would get it when Gonzalez converted a penalty kick to tie it at two in the 74th. Both teams tried to break through for the lead. But ultimately, the game was deadlocked at two as both teams went into overtime.

The first overtime yielded little although the Lobos would strike for a couple of shot opportunities late to try to win it. SRUS had a shot go off the crossbar with under a minute to go and the attempt after that was saved sending the match into a second overtime. ETBU would get the first shot on goal but it was saved. Then the Lobos had two golden goal chances snatched away by Groves. With 18 seconds to play, Sangano broke loose and would win the one-on-one battle with Rodriguez scoring the game winner.

ETBU returns home to Cornish Field for a Sunday afternoon contest against Colorado College at 1:00 PM.
