COLUMBUS, Miss. - Dominating the game on both sides from start to finish, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team came away with 2-0 shutout victory over the Mississippi University for Women Owls. This completes an unbeaten Labor Day weekend for ETBU, who are 1-0-1 after two matches.Â
Â
On the day,
Ashleigh Rondon and
Kendall Shirley each had six shots overall while
Megan Friend had two shots on goal in three attempts. ETBU's goals came from
Jenna Kucera and
Gabrielle Henley throughout the game while
Samantha Martinez and
Kibriana Bonner had an assist each. Meanwhile, six MUW players would have a shot in the game while goalkeeper Sarah Gilliland made four saves on six shots on goal.Â
Â
Overall, ETBU out shot MUW 22-6 and picked up six corner kicks along the way. ETBU's defense was so effective that goalkeeper
Karrigan Falber only had one save all game long.
Â
Although ETBU collected more shot opportunities, it wasn't until the 21st minute of the game when they got their first shot off. Before that, MUW got two shots, which were blocked and wide of the net. The game would continue to fall in ETBU's possession as they would fire off shot after shot. But nothing was falling through for ETBU until the final minute of the first half when Martinez fed Kucera, who tallied the first goal of the game.Â
Â
The second half started with both teams taking good shot opportunities with the closest one being in the 55th minute as MUW was a post away from tying the game at one apiece. The Tigers would soon regain control as they would set the tempo for the second half with pressuring the MUW defense on offense. The Owls would hold their own for the longest time despite being down a goal. But then, ETBU sealed the victory with a goal by Henley on the assist from Bonner and a 2-0 lead. MUW would not get another shot off and ETBU went off the field for their first win of the season.
Â
ETBU will hit the road this week when they travel to Sherman, Texas, for a road match against Austin College. Kickoff begins at 6:00 PM.Â
