MARSHALL, Texas – Evening their record in the American Southwest Conference at 3-3, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team dominated Louisiana College, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon. ETBU is now 4-8 overall.
ETBU took 22 shots earning three goals from
Max Ponticorvo,
Isaiah Simien (assist) and
Travis Floyd while
Diego Gutierrez recorded two assists on the game. ETBU's fourth goal was an own goal by LC.
Cristian Hernandez finished the night with three saves overall. Of the nine shots taken by the Wildcats, only a goal from Travion Prevost prevented a shutout while goalkeeper Caleb Cruz finished with 10 saves.
The first 15 minutes saw the Tigers take the early 2-0 lead. ETBU made the most of their first chance as Ponticorvo would score just 84 seconds into the contest. Then, Simien would record his fifth goal of the season to put LC down by two, 2-0. ETBU would continue to put up multiple scoring chances only to have Cruz keep the Wildcats within two. ETBU's defense would only see one LC shot on goal going into halftime.
When the second half began, ETBU kept up the pressure with multiple shot opportunities. Ironically, it was an own goal from the Wildcats that would extend ETBU's lead to 3-0 in the 57
th minute. Another 10 minutes went by before Floyd capitalized on the fourth goal for ETBU. LC would wait until the 86
th minute before they would be able to get on the board. But by then, it was too late and ETBU preserved the win.
ETBU will hit the road next week to Richardson, Texas, to take on the University of the Texas Dallas on Thursday night at 7:30 PM.
