CLARKSVILLE, Ark. - After 108 minutes played, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team escaped Arkansas with a 1-0 victory over the University of the Ozarks.
Ashleigh Rondon scored the team's golden goal in the second overtime with her third career winning goal. With the win, ETBU moves to 6-8-1 overall and 3-5 in the American Southwest Conference.
ETBU launched 19 total shots, including 11 on goal.
Cara Hunt led the way in shot attempts recording five. Rondon ranked second in attempts, with four, and
Raegan Kappler and
Brianna Mickshaw each tallied three.
Riley Broughton and
Kayla Nichols rounded out the effort with two shots each. Defensively,
Maddie Rea recorded nine saves on 14 shots faced.
UO's Madison Chaney opened the contest with the game's first shot attempt, resulting in the first save by Rea four minutes into the contest. Nichols responded with an attempt of her own, resulting in a save by UO's Kiara Henry. Both teams would launch three more shots at the net before the end of the half. Neither team recorded a score in the first 45 minutes, leaving the score at 0-0.
With time winding down in the second period, Ozarks received an attempt by Hannah Smith, resulting in another save by Rea in the 83rd minute. Rondon and Hunt would find both of their attempts bottom out over the next seven minutes, leading to the 0-0 stalemate at the end of regulation.
Neither team would find the net in the first overtime frame, which would set the stage for a Kappler-Rondon connection. Kappler would touch the ball ahead to a streaking Rondon, leading to the game-winning goal and a Tiger's victory (1-0) in the 108th minute.
ETBU will return to Cornish Field to host ASC opponent Sul Ross State University on Thursday, October 24
th at 5:00 p.m.
