RICHARDSON, Texas - Heading down to the final seconds of regulation, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with a buzzer-beater loss to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 62-60. ETBU is now 7-2 overall as they head into American Southwest Conference play.
Robby Dooley led the way with 18 points while both
Nathan Fontenot and
Westin Riddick added 13 and 11 points respectively. Dooley also finished as the leading rebounder with six while
Landin Brown contributed eight assists. Ethan Bublitz finished with a game-high 20 points for UWSP while Matt Koerner (14 points) and Brandon Spray (10 points) collected double-digits of their own. Â
UWSP would outshoot the Tigers 42.6%-41.5% from the field while they would win the rebounding game 35-29. They finished with a 24-20 edge in points in the paint and 14-10 in points off turnovers. ETBU did manage to have 18 points from the bench.
ETBU started the first half off slowly as UWSP began the game with a 10-0 run (20:00-17:10). ETBU would answer back with a 10-3 run (16:04-13:53) as Dooley started with five unanswered points. The middle of the half saw the teams locked in a defensive battle with UWSP taking a 19-15 lead. UWSP would expand their lead to 24-17 while Fontenot (5:13) and Dooley (4:33) would cut the margin to 26-22. Again, the Pointers Pushed their lead to nine, 33-24, on a 7-2 rally (3:45-2:27). ETBU would end the half with seven points including four from Brown to cut the lead to five, 36-31. Â
Momentum of the game would change when the Pointers began the second half on a 12-4 run (20:00-13:10) to lead 48-35. Back-to-back three-pointers by Fontenot (12:22-11:46) put the Tigers to within 48-41. UWSP would increase the lead to 56-45 with 8:18 to go. Dooley (6:49, 4:47) and Riddick(6:32, 4:09) would ignite a 9-2 rally to cut the deficit to 58-54. Then,
Jordan Gray would knock down a three-pointer to bring the score to 60-57 with three minutes. Riddick then tied the game with a three-pointer as ETBU completed a 15-4 run to tie the game with just under two minutes to play. ETBU turned the ball over with 30 seconds left on the game as UWSP was given a chance to win it. UWSP took advantage of it and hit the game winning shot with one second left ending ETBU's winning streak.
ETBU will head out to Abilene, Texas, to take on Hardin-Simmons on Thursday January 2nd at 7:30 PM in ASC play.
