#TIGERSWIN: @ETBU_Baseball Blanks #20 Chapman, 3-0

CHAPMAN, Calif.,  - In a pitcher's duel for five innings, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team rewarded Derrick Findley with his first win of the season by scoring three runs late against #20 Chapman University for the upset win in game one, 3-0. This marks ETBU's second straight shutout win and improves their record to 3-1 overall while ending CU's unbeaten mark. ETBU is now 3-1 in the last two years against top 20 programs.

ETBU finished with eight hits overall as Zach Gartner (two runs) and Ford Spigener each had two hits apiece while Seth Mikeska picked up the only run batted in. Findley pitched seven innings allowing four hits while striking out three batters. Aaron Wong, Drew Littwin, Miguel Cebedo, and Jarod Penniman had the only hits for CU while starting pitcher Tyler Peck took the loss with seven innings allowing two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts.

Both starting pitchers pitched five scoreless innings as the Tigers would see their first six hitters retired. CU would have two runners on base in the bottom of the second before a fly out to left field ended the threat. In the top of the third, Spigener led off with a single and advanced to scoring position on a balk but he would remain stranded as the three hitters behind him went down in order.

Although Findley was solid by allowing two hits through five innings, the Panthers did put pressure in the bottom of the fourth when a two-out walk and a hit-by-pitch sent a runner in scoring position. Combs decided to pick off the runner at first to end the inning. ETBU's next scoring chance came with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning to load the bases.  CU would stall any chance of an ETBU score with a strikeout to end the frame.

The top of the sixth brought leadoff singles by Combs and Gartner which would eventually lead to two wild pitches scoring both of them as the Tigers led 2-0. CU would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. But it was no trouble for Findley, who managed to retire the third out of the inning keeping the shutout intact. ETBU added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a double by Mikeska to make it 3-0. Boudreaux handled the final six outs for a save that helped the Tigers to preserve the win.

ETBU will face Chapman tomorrow for their doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
