MARSHALL, Texas – Looking to continue their historic start to the 2019 season, the #6 East Texas Baptist University softball team will spend Saturday in Sequin, Texas, for doubleheader against Texas Lutheran University. ETBU last played TLU in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
This past week saw ETBU pick up five more wins against SUNY-Oneonta and Howard Payne University. After two shutout victories against SUNYO, ETBU swept HPU 4-0 in game one before picking up 9-4 and 6-2 wins. ETBU had a strong pitching performance from
Beatriz Lara, who had a scoreless inning streak of 40 before giving up a run in game three. Both
Emily Deramus and
Kourtlin Hunter hit their first collegiate home runs during the stretch.
Because of the five wins, ETBU is not only off to their best start in program history at 19-0 but they are also in the midst of the longest winning streak to start the season. While
Hannah Garcia is the holder of the top batting average (.432),
Daniella Solis leads with 24 hits.
MacKenzie Anderson (seven homers) is tied with Lara in RBI with 18 each. In the circle, Lara is 11-0 with an ERA of 0.96 allowing 12 runs on 41 hits with 78 strikeouts.
Last season saw TLU end ETBU's 2018 year with a 13-1 victory over the Tigers. This year, TLU is 10-4 overall following four straight wins over the University of Dallas. Kelly Jurden (20 hits) and Casey Martin have a batting average of .455 while Cassie Roche leads with 10 RBI and three homers. All five pitchers TLU has used in Kassie Maddox (0.00), Kelsie Stone (1.62), Kayla Oliveira (1.73) Jordan Bishop (1.97) and Lauren Myers (2.00) have ERAs of 2.00 or under.
Saturday's two contests will start at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
