MARSHALL, Texas – Continuing their momentum on offense from the night before, the East Texas Baptist University baseball finished off the two game sweep over Hendrix College, 11-6, on Wednesday afternoon. ETBU is now 14-8 overall and have won nine of their last 12 games.
Three Tigers had three hits with
Casey Combs leading the way with four RBI and two homers while
Zach Gartner (two RBI) and
Landen Barns (three RBI) combined for five RBI combined.
Zackery Pierce finished as the winning pitcher with six innings of work allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Andrei Stoyanow led HC with three hits and two RBI while Austin Pierce took the loss with three innings allowing three runs and five hits.
HC would get their early run in the first on a two-out single despite Gartner throwing a runner out at third to end the inning. Gartner then drove in the tying run with a triple in the bottom of the first before scoring on a wild pitch to lead 2-1. Combs would then homer in his fourth straight game with a solo shot in the bottom of the third as ETBU went up 3-1. Pierce held HC without a run in the next four innings following the first as he kept to the two-run lead. ETBU scratched a run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Barns would get an RBI groundout to lead 4-1.
One inning later, ETBU would pick up three runs as RBI singles by Gartner and Barns extended their lead to 7-1. The Warriors would cut into the margin at 7-3 with two in the seventh. Combs would answer with his second homer for three runs and saw ETBU up 10-3. Both teams tallied a run in the eighth inning as
Brady Faulkner's RBI knock took the score to 11-4. HC would get two runs and loaded the bases with the tying run on deck. But
Taylor Knowles picked up a big strikeout to end the game at 11-6.
Two games into their eleven-game home stretch, the Tigers will welcome Belhaven University starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
