ALPINE, Texas - Tied at seven going into the ninth inning, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team would once again find a way to win as they put up four runs on the Sul Ross State University pitching staff for the come-from-behind 11-7 win. ETBU extends their record to 22-10 overall and 11-5 in the American Southwest Conference.
Offensively,
Landen Barns led the way with four RBI on three hits while
Zach Gartner and
Brady Faulkner each had three RBI on two hits. ETBU started with
Derrick Findley on the mound, who went 3.2 innings giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out two. The bullpen of
Call Florence (2.2 IP, three hits, three runs, four strikeouts) and
Alek Arellano (0.2 IP, no runs, two hits, one strikeout) kept ETBU in the game before
Chad Boudreaux earned the win with two innings of one-hit ball and two strikeouts.
SRSU struck first with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. ETBU scored one run on a bases-loaded walk to
Dylan Sumpter in the top of the second to tie it at one. SRSU would regain the lead in the second before tacking on two more runs in the fourth to go up 4-1.
Both teams scored in the sixth as Barns' RBI single was countered with another solo homer for the Lobos. But then, ETBU showed signs of life in the sixth as Gartner would knock in Sumpter with a single. Then Barns came through with a triple to tie the game before Faulkner gave ETBU their first lead at 6-5 with a single. It stayed that way until the seventh when SRSU put up two runs to go back up 7-6. ETBU would manage to knot the score one inning later on a sacrifice fly by Faulkner. The Lobos did put runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth but a long flyout to right kept the score tied.
Then came the ninth, which started with a leadoff hit by pitch to
Drew Helberg. A walk to Sumpter was followed by
Casey Combs reaching first to load the bases. That brought up Gartner, who singled in two runs to make it 9-7. Insurance hits by Barns and Faulkner brought ETBU's lead to 11-7. This was all Boudreaux would need as he would finish the win with a strikeout.
ETBU will look to win the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM.
