ALPINE, Texas – Taking apart the pitching staff of the Lobos, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team completed their sweep against Sul Ross State University, 7-4, and 18-8. ETBU is currently 24-10 overall and 13-5 in the American Southwest Conference.
ETBU would start off strong with a 7-4 win in the first game.
Dylan Sumpter and
Casey Combs (two RBI) led the way with three hits each while
Seth Mikeska picked up a two-run homer.
Alan Underwood earned the win with five innings pitched allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
By game two, ETBU would put up 12 runs in the first three innings on their way to an easy seven-inning 18-8 victory.
Zach Gartner (three RBI) posted four hits while
Landen Barns and
Zachary McAdams both notched five RBI on two hits.
Adrian Stover got the start going four innings allowing four runs on four hits while striking out two.
Blake Corbin ended up getting the win with one inning allowing two runs on four hits and striking out two as well.
Game 1: ETBU 7, SRSU 4
Two batters into the game, Combs would drive in Sumpter for an early 1-0 lead. This would be followed by RBI singles from Barns and Faulkner to extend it to 3-0 after one. Combs then drove in Sumpter in the second inning, which brought the score to 4-0. SRSU would get on the board with a sacrifice fly to left in the third.
ETBU would extend the score to 5-1 with a
Ford Spigener double while the Lobos would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth. But Mikeska would put the game out of reach with a two-run homer to left at 7-3. Despite giving up a run in the seventh, Boudreaux held down the 7-4 lead for the Tigers, who took the series win.
Game 2: ETBU 18, SRSU 8
Loading the bases in their first three batters of the game, the Tigers would put up a four-spot as a hit by pitch to Mikeska preceded a bases-clearing double by Barns. SRSU would put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. ETBU then broke the game open with six runs in the second. A two-run Gartner homer was followed by a single by Spigener and a sac fly by
Tyler Johnson. Then it was McAdams who drove in two more with a double.
Gartner and Barns would then tack on more RBI with a double and a sacrifice fly to make it 12-1. After a three-run Lobo homer brought the score to 12-4, the game reached the end of the fourth when lightning delayed the game. When play resumed in the top of the fifth, it didn't take long for ETBU to strike back with a run as Combs homered to left seeing the score 13-4.
The Lobos would put two runs in the fifth inning to trail 13-6. But ETBU would have another offensive surge in them as with five runs in the seventh, they led 18-6. It was RBI singles by Barns and
Tyler Johnson before McAdams went deep with a three-run homer. SRSU would get two runs before the Tigers finished off the win with
Erik Gipson striking out the side.
ETBU is back home this weekend when they host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The first game will be on Thursday night at 7:00 PM
