@ETBU_Baseball Comeback Bid Stifled by LETU

MARSHALL, Texas – Battling inclement weather and a three run deficit, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team forced extra innings but were unable to seal the comeback effort, falling to LeTourneau University, 7-6. ETBU picks up the 2-1 series win, improving to 10-5 in American Southwest Conference play and 21-10 overall on the year. LETU is now 17-13 overall and 7-5 in the ASC.

Zach Gartner led the overall effort recording two runs, three hits, a homerun and three RBI in five at bats. Seth Mikeska added three hits, one run and one RBI in five appearances. Landen Barns picked up two hits and two RBI. Eli Birriel led the Yellow Jackets with three hits, two RBI and one. Chad Boudreaux suffered the loss in 2.2 innings pitched. Ryder Lognion claimed the win for LETU after pitching in 1.1 innings on the day.

Gartner started the game off for the Tigers in the bottom of the first inning singling up the middle. He would steal second and then came home on a Mikeska single for the 1-0 lead. Mikeska would then score on a Barns double for a 2-0 advantage.

The top of the third saw Christopher Robinson pinch running for the Tigers. After an intentional walk to Mikekska, Robinson scored the game's third run of the ballgame putting ETBU on top 3-0.

LETU scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth. The bases were loaded, when Brandon Ramirez was sent home to cut the deficit to two (3-1). The Yellow Jackets would rattle off five consecutive runs to go on top by three, 6-3, heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Tigers would have two runners on when Gartner would step up to make the clutch play of the ballgame. The senior right fielder homered out to center field, tying up the ballgame at six.

After an hour weather delay, LETU would put one run on the board after Birriel picked up a single out to right field, sending Noah Mahoney home and bringing the score to 7-6. The Tigers were unable to respond in the bottom of the 10th inning, leading to the 7-6 victory for the Yellow Jackets.

ETBU will make the trek to Alpine, Texas, for a three-game series with Sul Ross State University next weekend. First pitch is set for Friday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m.
