MARSHALL, Texas – Dialing up five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after an hour rain delay, the #3 East Texas Baptist University softball team picked up their 30
th victory of the season defeating American Southwest Conference rival LeTourneau University, 6-2. With the 3-0 sweep of the Yellow Jackets, ETBU improves to an impressive 21-0 in the ASC and 30-1 overall. LETU drops to 17-13 overall and 14-10 in ASC matchups.
Corley Carpenter led a well-balanced attack by ETBU tallying three hits.
Beatriz Lara picked up two hits in three at-bats with two RBI, while Mackenzie Anderson,
Mariah Delgado,
Liz Adams,
Emily Deramus and
Hannah Garcia each recorded a run. Deramus also put in work in the circle, picking up the win in two innings of relief pitching.
LETU recorded the game's first run in the top of the second inning, when Haydn Parker connected on a home run to bring the score to 1-0. ETBU responded in the bottom of the second with Deramus scoring on a throwing error to tie the game at one.
The Yellow Jackets had yet another answer, this time from Taylor Nichols, who sent yet another pitch over the wall to give her team the 2-1 lead in the top of the third. The Yellow Jackets would hold on to the one run advantage until the bottom of the sixth, where the Tigers put together a furious comeback. ETBU scored five runs in the inning, capped off by an Adams run off of an LETU error. The first two runs of the inning came with one out as both Carpenter and Garcia scored to take the 3-2 lead. Lara followed with a single to left centerfield for two RBI as both Anderson and Delgado scored making it 5-2. Adams was the final run on another LETU throwing error.
The Yellow Jackets were unable to come away with an answer in the top of the seventh, sealing the Tigers' comeback efforts with a 6-2 victory.
ETBU will make the trip to Abilene, Texas, for a three-game series with Hardin-Simmons University on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
