MARSHALL, Texas – Unable to capitalize on their chances, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team fell, 3-0, to Sewanee University on Friday Night at Cornish Field. ETBU is now 1-3 on the year.
With 16 shots on the night,
Max Ponticorvo lead with five shots while
Tristan England,
Travis Floyd, and
Isaiah Simien managed two shots apiece for ETBU.
Justin Groves faced five shots and made two saves. SEW had three goals as Tashinga Vhumisai (22:09), Zach Birkhead (31:22), and Ben Vaeth (51:57) scored. Goalkeeper James Murray saved five shots to preserve the shutout.
Both teams struggled to score in the first 20 minutes as ETBU tallied three shots while SEW had one. But SEW would break through first in the 23
rd minute for a 1-0 lead. It would be 2-0 lead nine minutes later as SEW managed another goal. Three ETBU chances could not break the shutout as SEW would lead at the break, 2-0.
It would take the first SEW shot of the second half put the score at 3-0 just seven minutes in. ETBU would have three chances in an eight minute span that ended with two SEW saves and a shot wide right. ETBU would never get the break needed to get back into the game as SEW preserved the shutout in the final minutes.
ETBU will resume their season on Sunday as they face Birmingham-Southern at 1:00 PM. The game will be at Cornish Field.
