MARSHALL, Texas – Two second half goals in the final 10 minutes of the match for the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team was the difference as the Tigers ousted the Millsaps College Majors, 2-0. ETBU has gone unbeaten in their last three games and are now 3-2-1 overall.
ETBU's heroics came from
Olivia Gallegos, who netted first goal of the match in the 84
th minute while
Kibriana Bonner, who had the assist on the first goal, added an insurance goal in the 89
th minute for the victory. Outshooting the Majors 27-3, ETBU had five shots from Gallegos and Reagan Kappler while
Ashleigh Rondon had four.
Maddie Rea recorded the only save of the contest for the Tigers while posting a shutout along with
Karrigan Falber. MC had Riley Fobare produce two of the three Majors' shots while goalkeeper Maddie Moore finished with 15 saves.
ETBU put up their first shot just two minutes into the contest, which in turn would lead to eight more shots to finish the first half with nine shots in total. MC would grab all of their shots in the first half, including one that was saved by Rea in the 39
th minute. The first half would end up scoreless.
By the second half, ETBU's defense wouldn't allow a single Major offensive chance as they kept the ball out of the goalie box. Meanwhile, Moore was seeing more Tiger offensive chances as she batted the first twelve shots in the half to keep the game scoreless. Then, shot number 22 would break through as Gallegos (83:54) rebounded the ball off the crossbar to place it in the net. The momentum would belong to the Tigers as they would see Bonner (88:56) scoring the dagger to preserve the 2-0 victory.
ETBU will return home next Saturday at 1:00 PM when they host LSU-Alexandria at Cornish Field.
