BELTON, Texas – Upsetting the reigning American Southwest Conference champions, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team connected on two second half goals for the 2-1 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders. ETBU is now 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the ASC.
ETBU's defense came through in the match as they held the Crusaders who had 23 shots with 10 on goal. ETBU posted 10 shots with five on goal.
Cristian Hernandez received the start and collected eight saves.
Pressuring early in the first half, ETBU had their first shot on goal in the third minute from
Jacob Lopez. They then had shots on goal in the 34
th and 37
th minutes but couldn't find the net. UMHB had eight shots with three on goal.
After the scoreless first period, ETBU struck first in the 58
th minute when
Keaton Johnson found the net for the 1-0 lead. UMHB countered in the 66
th minute on a Jason Goodin goal to tie it up. It was the footwork of
Isaiah Simien in the 72
nd minute that put ETBU up for good, 2-1. In the final 17 minutes, Hernandez stopped five shots to record the upset as UMHB took 15 shots in the half.
ETBU will be back home on Thursday, October 3, when they host Hardin-Simmons University at 7:30 p.m.
