MARSHALL, Texas – Clutch hitting in the late innings led the #4 East Texas Baptist University softball team to capture a 7-4 victory over Sul Ross State University completing the series sweep. ETBU is now 10-0 and 6-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
Regina Garza (RBI) and Hannah Garcia (RBI) each had two hits on the day. Daniella Solis (HR) and Emily Deramus each drive in a pair of RBI while Chelcie Pierce had the go-ahead RBI in the fifth inning. Beatriz Lara went two innings allowing three runs on four hits. Preslye Cox came in relief pitching the final five innings allowing just one run on four hits as she earned the second win of the series.
The Lobos would strike with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. ETBU loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning with two outs as Deramus was hit by the pitch that brought in a run. The lead would grow back to two for SRSU, 3-1, in the second inning. ETBU would put two runners on base in the second inning but could not bring them in.
ETBU grabbed their first lead of the game, 4-3, in the fourth on a RBI single by Smith was followed by a two-run blast from Solis. SRSU tied the game in the top of fifth inning only to see ETBU regain the lead, 5-4, thanks to a RBI double by Pierce. Garcia would follow with an RBI single that brought the lead to two, 6-4. A bases loaded walk to Deramus in the sixth inning added another run, 7-4, which became the final.
ETBU now prepares for seven games next weekend in Tucson, Ariz., beginning with two on Friday at 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM against DePauw (IN) and St. John Fisher College (NY).
