MARSHALL, Texas - Making history in only their fourth season as a program, the East Texas Baptist University hockey recorded their best season, ever. They would not only finish as North Division Regular Season Champions of the Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference, but would also qualify for the American Collegiate Hockey Association Regional Tournament for the first time.
Â
ETBU finished with a program best 22-5-1 record starting the season off winning their first 17 games in a row. Included in this stretch were sweeps of Texas State, Texas, North Texas, Dallas Baptist, and TCU. Taking their first trip to the West Coast, they swept the best California teams in California State-Northridge, California State-Fullerton, and Long Beach State. The streak would end on November 22nd as they fell in the first game to Texas A&M.Â
Â
Bouncing back after the Texas A&M series, ETBU swept defending conference champion University of Texas-El Paso and also took care of UNT again. They finished the regular season with the best record in the TCHC and would be the top seed in the post season tournament. They would fall, 3-2, in overtime to Texas A&M in the semifinals, but would wait to see if they received a bid to the ACHA Regional Tournament.
Â
A bid is what they received to the regional tournament after help from other teams in the region qualifying for their first tournament. With a first round match up against CSU-Northridge, whom they saw earlier in the season, ETBU held on for a, 5-4, overtime victory and their first ACHA regional post-season win. Their dreams of advancing onto the national tournament would end the next day in a, 6-1, loss to Metropolitan State University-Denver.
Â
The individual awards poured into the team after such a great season, too. ETBU had five all-TCHC honors in
Skyler Spiller,
Riley Knott, and
Tyler Fitzgerald taking home first team honors while
Ryan Gruszka and
Davis VanGemerden received second team honors. Knott would also earn an ACHA West Region All-Second Team being  ETBU's top scorer in points (77), goals (37), and assists (40). Head coach
Alain Savage was named the TCHC Coach of the Year.Â
