ABILENE, Texas - Despite equalizing the match in the final minutes of regulation, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team would suffer a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to McMurry University in overtime. ETBU is now 1-6-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the American Southwest Conference.
Garrett Garvin,
Rafael Mijares, and Justin Crow each scored for the Tigers in the game. Garvin would also have two shots along with
Travis Floyd (assist) and
Bruno Palmieri. Both
Cristian Hernandez and Tristan Whelcel recorded two saves apiece in goal.
Just five minutes in, the War Hawks got on the board first with a goal. But, it wouldn't be long before ETBU answered as at the end of the seventh minute, Garvin equalized on a Floyd assist. The score stayed tied through halftime and as the second half started, McM would get ball control to their favor. On their third shot, they netted the go-ahead goal in the 58th minute.
Undaunted, ETBU would have an answer. After a foul was committed, Mijares would take the free kick and score on the high right side of the goal to level the match at two. But, that would spark the War Hawks, who then upped the pressure and retook the lead in the 79th minute. Approaching the final minute, Crow would strike the tying goal and send the game to overtime. Although ETBU had two shots in the overtime session, the first War Hawk shot at the 98th minute would be the one to end the game at 4-3.
The Tigers will look to split their matches in Abilene as they will battle with Hardin-Simmons on Sunday at 3:30 PM.
