VB | ETBU Comes Up Short vs. #8 UMHB

MARSHALL, Texas – Playing their sixth straight game in Ornelas Gym, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team came up short of upsetting #8 the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-0 (19-25, 22-25, 20-25). ETBU is now 9-9 and 6-6 in the American Southwest Conference.
 
Avery Reid produced a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Kaylee Morton added 10 assists and Lillie Hill recorded 16 digs. Kayla Rainey also added 11 digs.
 
ETBU battled hard in all three sets against #8 UMHB. The Crusaders took a 7-3 lead in set one as ETBU came back to tie the game four times before taking the lead, 12-11, on a Reid kill. Both teams went back and forth and was tied at 14 on an Annie Harris kill. UMHB then went on a 7-1 run for the 21-15 lead. ETBU could not get any closer than five as UMHB took the set, 25-19.
 
Set two went the same way as set one as both teams went back and forth. Tied at eight, UMHB went on an 8-2 run for a 16-10 lead. UMHB pushed it to 18-12 but ETBU came back to within four, 20-16. Rainey once again put ETBU within four, 22-18, on a kill. Down 24-18, ETBU scored the next four points as Reid had three kills in the run to make it 24-22. A UMHB kill ended the set as ETBU went down 0-2, 25-22.
 
Shooting out to a 4-0 lead in set three, ETBU looked to switch the momentum their way. UMHB then scored the next four points to tie the set at four. A kill by Harris and a service ace made it 6-4 for ETBU but UMHB had a 4-1 run for an 8-7 lead. ETBU tied the game at nine on a Hannah Perry kill but once again UMHB went on a 5-1 run for a 14-10 lead. UMHB never lost the lead again. ETBU pulled to within two, 22-20, on an UMHB error after a kill by Perry. UMHB then took the match, 25-20.
 
ETBU will have their seventh straight home match on Monday vs. Belhaven University at 6:00 p.m.
