MARSHALL, Texas – A non-conference final home game of the 2021 fall season, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team came up short of a victory as Centenary University held off the Tigers, 2-1. ETBU is now 4-10-2 overall.
ETBU took five shots in the game as all five were on goal as Centenary had 17 shots with nine on goal.
JaeShaun Osborn led the way with two shots on goal recording ETBU's goal in the first half.
Isaiah Simien,
Devin Francois, and
Jordan Berscheidt all had a shot on goal.
Anthony Lozada recorded four saves in the first half and
Tristan Whelchel had three saves in the second half.
It was a close first half as each team scored a goal apiece. In the first six minutes Centenary had two shots that missed. ETBU answered with a shot on goal in the eighth minute that was saved. Striking back just two minutes later with a penalty kick, Centenary went up, 1-0. Two more shots in the 11
th minute by Centenary were saved by Lozada. It was in the 12
th minute the ETBU equalized the score as Osborn found the net. Five more shots by Centenary took place over the next 30 minutes with one on goal. In the 42
nd minute, Berscheidt had a shot on goal but was saved as the score stayed tied. Right before halftime, Centenary tried for the lead with their fifth shot on goal but Lozada saved it again.
ETBU's Simien came out in the 47
th minute of the game firing a shot on goal that was denied. After 15 minutes, Centenary followed with a shot on goal that was saved to keep the score at one. It was then in the 69
th minute that the Gents broke through for a 2-1 lead scoring on a shot to the bottom center. Whelchel had a save for ETBU in the 73
rd minute as the Tigers tried to tie the score in the 85
th minute.
Devin Francois shot on goal was saved again by Centenary as there were no more shots in the final five minutes.
The final regular season game will be on Friday, October 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Longview, Texas, at LeTourneau University.
