MARSHALL, Texas – It was the eighth five-set match of the year for East Texas Baptist University as they held off McMurry University, 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 29-27, 17-25, 16-14), in their final American Southwest Conference match. ETBU moves to 14-10 overall and 11-7 in the ASC while going 6-2 in five-set matches.
Avery Reid and
Kaylee Morton added double-doubles in the win. Reid came away with 12 kills and 17 digs while Morton had 25 assists and 12 digs.
Maddison Harris added 15 assists while
Lillie Hill had 16 digs.
Kayla Rainey collected four kills.
Down 11-9 in set one, ETBU tied the game at 12 on an
Annie Harris kill. With four more ties, and the final at 16, ETBU went on a 3-0 run for a 19-16 lead. Rainey put ETBU up by three with the kill and then made it 23-17 on another kill. A service error by McM made it 24-18 and then a kill by Hill ended set one in favor of ETBU, 25-19.
Set two brought a tight set ending in a McM win, 25-21, to tie at one all. ETBU then bounced back for a 29-27 win in set three. Tied at 24, 25, 26, and 27, ETBU took the set on a Harris kill and a McM attack error, 29-27.
McM won set four, 25-17, to set up the fifth and final set. It was another close set as ETBU pulled it out, 16-14. Two attack errors gave ETBU the win as they won their 14
th match of the year.
ETBU will now play Sul Ross State University on Thursday in Belton, Texas, in the ASC Tournament. ETBU is the #4 seed overall.
