JACKSON, Miss. - Coming within a single goal, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team was undone by a response from Belhaven University in what would prove to be a 3-1 triumph for the Blazers in Jackson. Following the loss, ETBU is 1-8-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the American Southwest Conference.
Outshot 15-12, the Tigers would have 10 of the 11 corner kicks on the contest. The lone goal would come from a penalty kick by
Juan Cairo. Cairo was also one of five Tigers with two shots along with
Isaiah Simien,
Garrett Garvin,
Travis Floyd, and
Bruno Palmieri.
Gunner Barry would notch five saves for the Tigers in the contest.
Exactly three minutes in, the Blazers struck first for what wound up being the only goal of the half. Although ETBU would have a few chances to tie in the half, their seven first half shots left them without a goal going into the break. Things only got tougher when in the 52nd minute, BU made it 2-0 with a second goal.
The Tigers had three shots following the goal. Soon, ETBU caught a break when they drew a foul in the box, which allowed Cairo to convert the penalty in the 72nd minute, cutting the lead to one. ETBU's momentum was short-lived, however, as the Blazers would bring back their two goal lead a minute later. ETBU was held to one shot in the final 17 minutes leaving Belhaven on top as 3-1 winners.
The Tigers will come back to Cornish Field this coming Thursday for a 7:30 PM kickoff against the University of the Ozarks.
