JACKSON, Miss. - Securing a 1-0 lead in the first half, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team would hang on to that final against Belhaven University. ETBU now sits at 6-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the American Southwest Conference.
The lone goal scorer for ETBU was
Katherine Vela, who's goal happened in the 42nd minute. She also recorded two shots along with
Sarah Ramos and
Amy Pineda.
Aylisse Warren recorded the assist on the goal.
Claire Montondon held BU scoreless as she collected three saves.
Each side combined for seven shots in the first 41 minutes of the contest. An early scoring chance in the 11th minute fell through for ETBU while Montondon kept BU off the board in the 35th. Vela came into the game and would soon strike the goal putting ETBU up 1-0 at the break.
Vela did have a chance for a second goal that was saved by BU's keeper. The Blazers then applied offensive pressure on ETBU and fired six shots, with a few saved by Montondon. ETBU couldn't capitalize on a scoring chance in the 79th minute. BU had two chances to tie in the final five minutes, but Montondon came through again in the clutch and preserved the shutout.
ETBU is back home on Thursday taking on the University of the Ozarks at 5:00 PM.
