HALLSVILLE, Texas - Needing just one penalty kick conversion, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team recorded their first win of the season, 1-0, over Louisiana College. ETBU evens their record at 1-1 following the win and is 1-0 in the American Southwest Conference East Division.
That one goal came from
Juan Cairo in the 18th minute on the penalty kick. It was one of four shots that he took, which was tied with
Silas Sangano for second behind
Isaiah Simien's six. Both
Cristian Hernandez and
Gunner Barry (two saves) would combine for all 90 minutes to record the shutout win. Arturo Riestra would have two shots to lead LC. ETBU would outshoot the Wildcats 14-5 all game long, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Both sides would have a shot attempt in the first 15 minutes of the game. At 17:18, the Tigers drew a penalty in the box, which gave Cairo an attempt to score. He converted and the Tigers took an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers would then record just three more shot attempts in the half while LC's keeper Caleb Cruz made two saves. ETBU would hold down LC for one shot early in the game as they took a 1-0 lead at the break.
LC would have an attempt to tie the game in the 48th minute, which missed wide of the net. Another Wildcat attempt to tie in the 53rd minute was saved by ETBU's defense. Barry would then make two critical saves in the 65th minute within a span of 15 seconds to keep LC off the board. Those shots would be the last chance for the Wildcats to tie the game. ETBU would manage nine shots in the half with four of them on goal holding off LC for the win, 1-0.
ETBU hits the road next Friday against Belhaven University at 7:00 PM.
