MARSHALL, Texas - Setting the tone early with a fast start, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team honored seniors
Landin Brown and Christopher Haynes with a 75-66 victory over Jarvis Christian College. ETBU is now 13-7.
Five players led ETBU with double-digit points as
Jaden Conner recorded 16 points.
Charlie Cochran tallied 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double while Haynes and
Aaron Gregg also tallied 12 points.
Jayden Williams scored 11 points. Brown tallied five assists and seven rebounds in his final regular season game in Ornelas Gym. Leland Kirkendoll would finish as the top scorer for Jarvis Christian with 19.
Although outshot by JCC in field goal range (42.9%-40.7%) and free throw percentage (87.1%-71.4%), ETBU managed to knock down six three-pointers to finish with 40.0% from downtown. ETBU had 38 rebounds overall.
After a 2-2 tie, ETBU went on a flourish of a run, 19-6, to lead 21-8. Their first half would feature four three-pointers and 43% from the field as both Williams and Conner led with nine points in the half. The Tigers' defense held the Bulldogs to just 29.6% from the field and one three-pointer. JCC did come within nine, 26-17, but would fall behind by double-digits, 39-27, going into halftime.
Early in the second half, ETBU created a 15-point lead, 48-33, with 16:26 to go. But the Bulldogs would answer with a 12-2 run (15:38-12:44) to trim the lead to five, 50-45. The rest of the second half followed a pattern as ETBU would create a three possession lead only for the Bulldogs to cut the lead down to as close as four points (64-60) with 5:43 to play. Gregg (5:22) and Haynes (4:42) would grab the eight-point lead with free throws as the Bulldogs would follow with a three to trail 68-63. Ultimately, ETBU converted free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
ETBU will have one final road trip in the regular season next week as they travel to Jackson, Miss., to face-off with Belhaven University on Thursday at 7:30 PM.
