MARSHALL, Texas - A cold-shooting night for the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team gave way to a 62-58 loss to the University of the Ozarks. ETBU is now 11-6 overall and 5-3 in the American Southwest Conference East Division.
Aaron Gregg scored 20 points to lead with six rebounds. Landon Brown added eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds while
Logan Blow tallied nine points. For the Eagles, Bryson Johnson had 18 points while Zach Bobo added 13 points.
The Tigers were haunted all-game long by cold-shooting making 32.9% from the field. This included just two three-pointers in the game and 50% from the free throw line. Although both teams finished with 45 rebounds each, the Tigers were out-rebounded defensively, 37-28.
Early on, the Eagles controlled the tempo with a 14-8 run (20:00-13:47) to start the game. ETBU could only get five early points from
Charlie Cochran in the first six minutes of the game. Out of a media timeout, the Tigers quickly turned the tide as Gregg would lead a run of eight straight points (13:30-11:42) with four of his own to take the lead, 16-14. This would extend to 22-18 with
Cody Hunter (8:25) and Cochran (7:30) knocking down buckets for a four-point edge. The Eagles retook the lead and would hang on to it for the remainder of the half. Despite being outshot from the field (40.6%-31.4%), a three by Gregg brought the Tigers to within one, 29-28, at the break.
The Eagles carried the momentum into the second half outscoring the Tigers, 10-5, in the first five minutes to lead, 39-33. ETBU would have their first big run of the game scoring 13 of the next 16 points (14:45-11:07). Gregg would put up six points while
Kevin Charles threw down a thunderous dunk (12:33) to lead, 46-42. Both teams then traded leads until the Eagles led, 51-50. Then, UO went on an 8-2 run (6:11-3:19) to push it to 59-52. The Tigers would put up another rally as Brown recorded four points, including a layup to trail 60-58 (2:06). The score stayed the same as neither side cold get a basket. With 15 seconds left, ETBU had a chance to win but the three-pointer went in and out as the Eagles rebounded and converted two free throws to ice the win.
ETBU will seek to bounce back this Saturday against Texas Dallas at 3:30 PM.
