MARSHALL, Texas – A tale of two different endings in a double header sweep, the #1 East Texas Baptist University softball team would secure two wins against Hardin-Simmons University, 12-0, and 7-6. The first game went only five innings but the second game two one extra inning for the victory. ETBU currently sits at 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
ETBU's offense poured in 12 runs to take the first game, 12-0, in five innings. While Murin Musicant led with three hits, she,
Tauryn Cummings (two hits), and
Tristen Maddox (two hits) drove in three RBI with the latter two homering in the game.
Preslye Cox would pitch four innings allowing three hits and striking out three.
Hannah Kelley then pitched the fifth and final inning allowing one walk and one strikeout.
Game two needed ETBU to rally back from 6-1 deficit to pull off a 7-6 win in eight innings.
Hannah Garcia had a team-high four hits while Musicant once again delivered three hits and three RBI.
Sarah Cedillo drove in two RBI. With 4.2 scoreless innings of relief,
Hannah Kelley would earn the win for the Tigers.
Game 1: ETBU 12, HSU 0 (5 Innings)
ETBU struck first with four first inning runs as Garcia singled to centerfield to score Delgado. Following a single to Musicant, Cummings then connected for a three-run blast to make it 4-0. The Cowgirls threatened in the top of the second inning with the bases loaded and one out. Fortunately, Cox would retire the next two hitters to keep HSU off the scoreboard.
In the bottom half of the second, ETBU blew the game open when Musicant cleared the bases with a three-run triple making it 7-0. Two-out RBI hits by Delgado and Gill in the bottom of the third would increase ETBU's lead to 9-0 after three innings. By the fourth inning, ETBU would make it 12-0 after Maddox homered herself and drove in two. ETBU then sealed the win to take game one, 12-0.
Game 2: ETBU 7, HSU 6 (8 Innings)
With two outs in the first, HSU would break Croft's scoreless innings streak of 16.1 innings with a solo home run. Held scoreless in their first inning, ETBU would answer with a RBI single from Bledsoe in the bottom of the second. But, the Cowgirls would put up five runs in the top of the fourth inning to lead 6-1.
ETBU loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning when Musicant drove in all three runs on a RBI double to cut the lead to two, 6-4. ETBU would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh for Cedillo. She then drove in two runs to tie the score with a single. After loading the bases again, ETBU couldn't deliver the winning run and the game proceeded to the eighth.
The Cowgirls threatened in the eighth loading the bases with two outs before a fly-out to right ended the threat. ETBU would load the bases in the bottom of eighth inning and they would come through for the win. Maddox would deliver the winning hit to score
Hannah Garcia for the 7-6 win.
ETBU will look to complete the sweep tomorrow at 12:00 PM.
