MARSHALL, Texas - Battling hard for 10 innings, the #1 East Texas Baptist University softball team came up short in a late comeback effort falling to Hardin-Simmons University, 7-6. The loss ends ETBU's 27-game winning streak dating back to the opening game in 2020. ETBU is now 12-1 on the year and 8-1 in the American Southwest Conference
Skylar Wilabay (two RBI, HR) and
Tauryn Cummings (RBI) would each have a team-high three hits.
Sarah Cedillo recorded two hits and a RBI.
Preslye Cox started the game going 4.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits.
Savannah Buhl came in for 2.2 innings with wo strikeouts before
Hannah Kelley finished the final 3.0 innings allowing four runs on five hits and receiving the loss.
Each side would be held scoreless for three innings although HSU did put a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning. The Cowgirls did break through in the top of the fourth inning for one run. One inning later, a RBI double made the score 2-0 in HSU's favor.
ETBU would score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead by one. Cummings picked up an RBI single to score Wilabay. After a sacrifice fly by
Tristen Maddox tied the score, Cedillo delivered a RBI single to put ETBU up 3-2. However, the Cowgirls loaded the bases in the top of the seventh before scoring the tying run. The Tigers would be held down in the bottom of the seventh and the game went into extra innings.
With no runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, HSU took the lead in the tenth scoring four runs with the international tie breaker rule. The Tigers would answer back as Wilabay's first homer of the season scored two runs and cut the lead to 7-5. Pinch hitter
Sydney Macias drove in
Hannah Garcia to make it 7-6 with nobody out. Unfortunately, ETBU was unable to drive in the tying run as HSU put an end to ETBU's undefeated streak.
ETBU will have a doubleheader this Tuesday night against Centenary College at Taylor Field. The first game will start at 4:00 PM while Game 2 will begin 30 minutes after.Â
