MARSHALL, Texas - Competing in a tight contest with the University of Texas Dallas Comets, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team couldn't pull off the upset of the undefeated teams falling, 3-2, on their senior night. ETBU is now 6-1 and 4-1 in the American Southwest Conference.
Raegan Kappler posted seven shots to lead ETBU while teammates
Brianna Mickshaw and Oliva Gallegos (assist) scored goals in the game. Of the 16 shots taken by ETBU,
Kayla Nichols was the other Tiger to have multiple shots with two.
Claire Montondon was in net for all 90 minutes giving up three goals while recording four saves.
It would take 20 seconds for ETBU to get their first shot of the game, which missed over the net. UTD's first two shots were saved by Montondon in the 6th and 7th minutes. But it was the third shot in the 12th minute would be a successful one for the Comets as they grabbed the early 1-0 lead. ETBU would have their next five shots saved by UTD's goalkeeper Morgan Sherman, who posted nine saves for the night. However, with 37 seconds to go in the first, Gallegos connected with Mickshaw for the tying goal sending both teams with one at the break.
ETBU's chance to grab the lead was again denied by Sherman in the first minute of the second half. UTD would benefit from this when after their first shot hit the crossbar with the rebound as the second shot went into the goal giving the Comets a 2-1 lead through 49 minutes. Following another Comet save, the Tigers struck again as Gallegos found the goal to tie the score at 2-2 in the 58th minute. This deadlock remained for the next 18 minutes as Montondon would make two more key saves. The Comets then took the lead in the 77th minute. ETBU would have a chance to tie the game, but was unsuccessful as the Comets ended ETBU's undefeated run.
The Tigers will be on the road this Tuesday to Jackson, Miss., for their next game against Belhaven University. The opening kickoff will be at 5:30 PM.Â
