MARSHALL, Texas – After two periods and a double overtime played, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team advanced on in the American Southwest Conference Tournament with 4-3 victory in penalty kicks against Sul Ross State University. ETBU advances to the semifinals with a 6-1-2 record with the first round tie. It is the first time that the women's soccer program has advanced in the ASC Tournament since 2005.
ETBU dominated the shots category (24-7) with
Brianna Mickshaw leading with five shots including three on goal.
Olivia Gallegos had four shots while both
Amy Pineda and
Ashleigh Rondon each recorded three shots.
Claire Montondon made five saves in goal in 110 minutes while SRSU's goalkeeper Alitzel Ybarra recorded 13 saves.
The first half would see ETBU take 11 shots in total. They also would have four corner kicks and their defense kept SRSU without a shot until the 40th minute of the game. With neither side scoring at halftime, the two teams would trade opportunities to score only for each keeper to keep them off the board. Each side would have one chance to break the tie in regulation before overtime was required.
The first overtime had two scoring chances from ETBU only to be thwarted off. Both sides would then try to score while ETBU had six corner kick chances in the overtime sessions combined. But nothing would occur and penalty kicks were required.
Aylisse Warren scored the first penalty kick for ETBU. But SRSU answered with two straight shots made to lead 2-1. Mickshaw would equalize and after the Lobos missed their next penalty kick in the third round.
Kibriana Bonner netted the go-ahead goal for ETBU on the fourth shot. It was tied at three apiece heading into the fifth round when ETBU missed their kick. Needing a save to extend the session, Montondon would come through with the biggest save of the match. Ultimately,
Karina Flores netted the game-winning shot while SRSU's last penalty sailed over the net.
ETBU will take on Hardin-Simmons University in the next round on Thursday in Richardson, Texas.
