MARSHALL, Texas – A late goal by Millsaps College in the 87
th minute ended East Texas Baptist University men's soccer's chances of a win in a heartbreaking loss, 2-1. ETBU is now 1-2-1 overall.
ETBU outshot MC, 10-3, in the second half to finish with a 15-9 advantage. Their only goal came from
Matthew Dieb, who produced a team high three shots along with
Garrett Garvin.
Juan Cairo recorded the lone assist in the second half. In his first start,
Anthony Lozada notched three saves in goal.
Both sides were in a defensive struggle in the first 20 minutes of the contest as only one shot by each team was given up in the stretch. MC had the lone goal in the 21st minute for the 1-0 lead. The Tigers had two chances to equalize in the 33rd and 34th minutes, but great goalkeeping and defense stopped them.
When the second half began, the Majors picked up two more shots before ETBU turned their offense up playing with urgency. After having a couple looks at the goal, ETBU found the back of the net with a header by Dieb in the 64th minute. ETBU then took multiple shots the rest of the half but could not find the net. With three minutes to go, MC's game-winning goal was scored from a corner kick. ETBU could not convert in the final three minutes as MC took the win.
ETBU will remain home at Cornish Field this coming Tuesday to take on the University of St. Thomas (Texas) at 5:00 PM.
