MARSHALL, Texas - Heroics from
Claire Montondon in goal and a strong second half sparked the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team to claim a 2-1 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders. The win is the first over UMHB since 2013. As of now, ETBU is 5-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
Montondon was the story as she put up 14 saves, which was the highest amount of saves since the 2017 conference tournament game against the University of Texas-Tyler. ETBU would have two second half goals with
Brianna Mickshaw and
Sarah Ramos scoring while
Raegan Kappler and
Kayla Nichols had the assists. Overall, UMHB would outshoot ETBU 22-12.
In the first half, the Crusaders discovered a problem in the person of Montondon, who recorded nine saves for ETBU. The Tigers would have four chances to score in the half, but failed to score. In the second half, UMHB failed to capitalize on an empty net situation. This gave ETBU momentum as they would capitalize with goals from Mickshaw (53:37) and Ramos (61:14) for a 2-0 lead. UMHB finally got on the board (83:48) with nearly six minutes left, but thanks to five saves by Montondon, the Tigers were able to hang on for a huge conference win.
The Tigers will now face Concordia University at 5:00 PM on Saturday at Cornish Field.
