RICHARDSON, Texas – Battling for the upper hand in the fight to get into the American Southwest Conference Tournament, East Texas Baptist University took a dead locked game with the Comets breaking open the scoring in the final seven minutes of the match for a 2-0 victory. Matt Dieb and
Garrett Garvin scored the goals for ETBU. This would be the first win against Texas Dallas since 2018 and only the third since 2009. ETBU is now 7-7-1 overall and 2-5 in the ASC.
ETBU was able to hold the line against UTD as
Anthony Lozada notched his first career win with a clean sheet facing nine shots on goal and 20 overall from UTD. ETBU was able to make their shots count with three of the eight being on target resulting in two goals. The Tigers also lead in corners by doubling UTD's total with six as one of the corners led to Matt Dieb's goal.
The first half saw both teams creating chances as ETBU was able to create five corner opportunities and drew six fouls off of the Comets. Four of Lozadas aforementioned saves came in the first and a spectacular goal line clearance by
Brady Box kept the teams level after the first 45 minutes. The Tigers sent four shots toward the goal with keeper Michael Hesse collecting one save.
The second half of action saw UTD step up their attacking taking 11 shots to ETBU's four. However, where the Tiger's may have lacked in quantity they made up for in quality with their two shots on goal finding the back of the net late in the match. The first was a well-placed corner from Garvin as he found Dieb on the back-post leaping in front of the keeper to head the goal in the 84
th minute. Garvin got his hands in the goal jar just six minutes later in the 89
th minute when he was able to beat two UTD defenders to get a shot off, with a defender in his pocket, ripping it past the keeper into the top right corner. ETBU was able to endure and capitalized when it mattered to get the 2-0 win over the Comets.
ETBU will head into the last week of the regular season hosting Howard Payne and Sul Ross on Thursday and Saturday respectively.
