ABILENE, Texas – A late push in the second half by East Texas Baptist University came up short as Hardin-Simmons University held off the Tigers, 3-2. ETBU is now 5-5-1 and 0-3 in the ASC.
ETBU collected two goals in the final 15 minutes to come within one goal but the offensive push came too late. ETBU posted 14 shots with five on goal.
Nicholas Sepulvado,
Garrett Garvin,
Luke Hunsinger, Challa Omandi, and
Royce McConnell all had shots on goal. Sepulvado and Hunsinger collected the goals. HSU took 27 shots with 11 on goal as
Anthony Lozada had eight saves.
HSU came out firing on all cylinders scoring two goals in the first 14 minutes for the quick lead. They found the net in the fifth and 14
th minutes and took 16 shots in the half. ETBU didn't have a shot on goal in the half.
Just 15 minutes into the second half, HSU moved their lead to three in the 60
th minute. All of ETBU's shots on goal came in the half as two were goals. Hunsinger scored his first collegiate goal in the 76
th minute on an assist by Omandi and
Isaiah Simien to cut the lead to two, 3-1. Sepulvado then made the final three minutes of the match even more exciting with a goal in the 87
th minute to come within one, 3-2. ETBU had one final look in the 89
th minute from
Gabriel Alvarez but his shot went over the top of the goal as ETBU came up short, 3-2.
ETBU will travel across town in Abilene on Saturday to face McMurry University at 7:30 p.m. in Wilford Moore Stadium.
