MARSHALL, Texas – A fifth inning rally gave East Texas Baptist University enough momentum to come from behind and take a 5-2 over Belhaven University in the American Southwest Conference opener. ETBU is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the ASC.
Cole Godkin went seven innings for the first win of the year recording seven strikeouts and giving up just two runs.
Trent Clark earned his second save of the season coming in for the final two innings allowing no runs or hits and striking out three.
Zachary McAdams led the team with three hits and one RBI recording a home run.
Brett Wagner and
Christopher Robinson each had two hits including a double. Robinson finished with two RBI.
Will Kelley and
Ben Lea also recorded a RBI.
POST GAME INTERVIEW
BU struck early on the first at-bat of the year with a home run for a 1-0 lead. They made it 2-0 in the third inning on a double play ball. ETBU earned their first run of the game in the third inning when Kelley lined a single down the left field line scoring
Austin Barry.
The fifth inning was the difference as ETBU scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead. McAdams had a solo home run to tie the game and then Robinson doubled in Kelley and Miller for the first lead of the game. Lea gave ETBU another insurance run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly as Wagner came in for the 5-2 win.
ETBU will play a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. vs. Belhaven pending weather.
