MARSHALL, Texas – A six-run eighth inning gave the East Texas Baptist University baseball team another comeback win as they waited until the very end to break through over the University of Texas Dallas, 10-5. ETBU is now 33-11 and needs to record just one more win to clinch the American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship.
ETBU produced 13 hits as
Jase Jones recorded three for three RBI.
Ben Lea had a grand slam in his only at-bat for four RBI while
Carson Wilson and
Brett Wagner each had a solo home run. Wilson and
Austin Barry both had two hits, too.
Cole Godkin started the game going five innings with four strikeouts and four earned runs.
Trent Clark came in for the win over three innings with four strikeouts and one earned run on three hits.
Jagger Neely worked the ninth inning shutting out UTD with one strikeout and no hits.
It was a back-and-forth battle the entire night but ETBU didn't have the lead until the eighth inning. Down 5-4, Jones singled up the middle as Barry came in to tie the game at five.
Zachary McAdams followed with a single to center field as Wagner was the sixth run of the game and ETBU's first lead. Two batters later, Lea pinch hit and took UTD's pitch to left field for a grand slam home run and a 10-5 lead.
The game started out with two runs in the first from a UTD home run. Wagner followed with a solo shot to cut the lead to one, 2-1, in the second inning. Jones then tied the game at two in the fourth inning on a single to center field as Barry scored. UTD once again hit a home run that put them up, 4-2, in the fifth inning. Jones once again pulled ETBU within one with another single up the middle in the sixth inning, 4-3, as
Christopher Robinson scored. UTD hit their third home run of the game making it 5-3 int eh seventh inning. Wilson homered in the seventh inning as ETBU came within one, 5-4, setting up the eighth inning for the win.
ETBU will take on UTD in game two at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Woods Field for a chance to win the ASC Championship.
