WS | Upset Bid of Alcorn State Comes Up Short

MARSHALL, Texas – Facing their second NCAA Division I program in two weeks, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team was just short of an upset over Alcorn State, 2-1. Earlier in preseason camp, ETBU had an exhibition vs. Louisiana Tech. ETBU is now 1-1 on the year.

ASU broke the 1-1 tie in the 70th minute as ETBU pushed hard in the final 20 minutes to tie up the game. Amy Pineda had a shot in the 80th minute that went left and then her second shot came on goal in the 86th minute that was saved by the ASC goalie.

There was 28 minutes of no scoring in the first period until ASU's Samara Nunn collected the first goal in the 29th minute for the 1-0 lead. They kept that lead until the 49th minute when Sarah Ramos found Kayla Nichols to tie the match up at one.

Overall, ETBU too 11 shots with four on goal while ASU took 15 with 12 on goal. ETBU had six corner kicks as ASU took five. Two goalies split time as Megan McCarthy had five saves and Addison Funk had the other five saves.

Pineda led the team with five shots with one on goal. Kat Izaguirre added two shots. Grace Freeman, Alicea, and Nichols had the other shots on goal.

ETBU will host Southwestern (KS) on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Cornish Field.
