MARSHALL, Texas – Hitting the road to Central Texas for two key American Southwest Conference games, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team will be traveling #22 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia University Texas this week. ETBU is 6-2 on the road this season as they look for their first road win in Belton, Texas, since 2015 over UMHB. ETBU has won the last four meetings in Austin vs. CTX.
ETBU is now 15-3 overall and 9-2 in the American Southwest Conference and in second place just one game behind Texas Dallas and a half-game ahead of UMBH. Last Thursday against Hardin-Simmons, the Tigers won 85-81, shooting 46% overall, 50% beyond the arc, and 83% on the line. They followed with another win against McMurry, 98-90 on Saturday for their 13
th win of the year.
Leading the team is
Darry Moore,
Aaron Gregg, and
Kevin Charles. Moore currently leads the team with 350 points and is shooting 63% overall. In the ASC, he is second in field goal percentage (.628), fifth for scoring averaging 19.4 points per game, ninth in free throw percentage (.805), and 10
th in rebounding (6.6 per game). This past week, Moore lead with 19 points against HSU recording a double-double with 10 rebounds. He also hit a personal high with two blocked shots in that game. On Saturday, he had 22 points against McMurry shooting 58% overall.
Gregg currently leads not only the team but the ASC with 97 assists averaging 5.7 per game. He has 328 points and is just 18 points away from hitting 1000 career points. Against HSU, he recorded 17 points, and shot six-for-six on the line. He also added five assists and two steals. He then recorded 21 points against McMurry going three-for-three beyond the arc.
Charles leads the team with 119 rebounds and 27 blocks. He is first in the ASC for blocks (1.7 per game) and fourth in rebounding (7.4 per game). Against HSU, he shot 50% on the court, recording 11 points with four blocks. He followed with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds against McMurry.
Kurt Labeaud had a strong performance last week in two games. He led the team with eight assists against McMurry and currently has 36 on the season averaging 2.4 per game.
ETBU will be at #22 UMHB on Thursday, January 26 at 7:30 pm. UMHB is currently 13-4 overall, and 8-2 in ASC and half-game behind ETBU for second place. The teams last competing in December where the Tigers came out victorious, 72-64, in Marshall. UMHB last won in February of 2022, 94-90, in Belton. Leading the Cru is Josiah Johnson as he leads the ASC in scoring with 390 points averaging 22.9 per game. Johnson is shooting 48% overall, 35% beyond the arc, and 86% on the line.
On Saturday, ETBU will head to Austin to take on Concordia Texas at 3:00 pm. CTX is 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the ASC. In their last matchup, the Tigers beat the Tornados 75-70, in Ornelas Gym. ETBU has won the last nine contests vs. CTX as the Tornados last won in January 2016, 101-90, in overtime in Marshall. Leading the Tornados is Jaylon Johnson as he leads the ASC shooting 46% beyond the arc. He has 296 points averaging 18.5 per game with 69 assists.
There are seven ASC games left this season with three at home as ETBU makes a run for the ASC regular season championship.
