ALPINE, Texas – With 2:44 left in overtime and down by one-point, 85-84, East Texas Baptist finished the game on a 11-0 run to secure a 95-85 victory over Sul Ross State University in American Southwest Conference play. It was the first win for ETBU in Alpine since January 9, 2016, when they won, 67-64, breaking a four-game losing streak in the Gallego Center. ETBU is now 12-2 and 6-1 in the ASC.
"I'm really proud of our guys as we haven't had any recent success in this building and on the fourth day on a road trip far from home we came in here and grinded out a win," says head coach Chris Lovell. "This win showed a lot of maturity and our entire team did exactly what it took to win."
Kevin Charles had a career game with 28 points and 16 rebounds for his third 20-plus game and double-double this year.
Darry Moore added double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Aaron Gregg finished with 18 points and six assists while
Jaden Conner had 12 points. SRSU's Julian Paredes had 29 points and six rebounds.
ETBU shot 48 percent overall but made just 25 percent from the arc and was 18-of-25 from the line. SRSU finished at 50 percent from the floor, 45 percent from the three-point line and 88 percent shooting free throws. ETBU scored 60 of their 85 points in the paint with 36 second chance points.
The first two minutes of overtime went back and forth as SRSU had a two-point lead, 82-80, within the first minute. Moore tied it at 82 on a layup and then Charles hit two free throws at 3:07 for the two-point lead, 84-82. Just 23 seconds later, at 2:44, SRSU swooshed a momentum three-pointer for a one-point lead, 85-84. That would be the final bucket made by the Lobos in the game as they went 0-for-5 in the final two and half minutes. ETBU answered SRSU's three-pointer on a Conner three-pointer 22 seconds later for the 87-85 lead starting an 11-0 run to end the game.
Ryan Elzy, Gregg, and Charles all scored in the run to help ETBU to the win.
There were 10 lead changes in the game and 12 times the score was tied. SRSU held a one-point lead at the half, 37-36, and had an eight-point lead, 17-9, in the first seven minutes of the game. ETBU made the opening bucket of the game for their only lead in the first-half at 2-0. In the final five minutes there were three ties as Charles made two free throws to come within one-point, 37-36, at the half.
ETBU opened the first five minutes of the second half on a 12-4 run for a seven-point lead, 48-41, as Conner finished it on a layup. Moore made it an eight-point lead, 55-47, on a Moore fast break layup at 11:28. By the 8:29 mark, SRSU had a 12-4 run to tie the game at 59. ETBU moved the lead back to six, 70-64, on a Conner layup at 4:37 but the game was tied at 74 with 1:19 left in the game. With 31 seconds left, Gregg made two free throws for the lead, 78-76, but SRSU made two free throws 15 seconds later tying it at 78. ETBU's last chance shot was denied as the teams went into overtime where ETBU won their 12
th game of the year.
ETBU will host Texas Dallas on Thursday, January 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Ornelas Gym.
